Abhanga 3399
Real integrity means having no hidden second intention, chasing no empty mirage, and depending on no one else's support but your own inner truth.
The verse
तरि च होय वेडी । नग्न होय धडफुडी ॥१॥
काय बोलाचें गौरव । आंत वरी दोन भाव ॥ध्रु.॥
मृगजळा न्याहाळितां । तान न वजाये सेवितां ॥२॥
न पाहे आणिकांची आस । शूर बोलिजे तयास ॥३॥
तुका म्हणे हें लक्षण । संत अळंकार लेणें ॥४॥
Literal translation
Only-then truly-mad — naked-bare. What-bolāchē-gaurava — two-bhāva-inside-and-out. Mirage-gazing-doesn't-quench-thirst-by-drinking. Doesn't-look-for-others'-āsa — that's-śūra. Tukā: this-is-the-lakṣaṇa — sant-aḷankāra-lēṇē.
What it means
A 5-verse sant-lakṣaṇa text. Truly mad becomes-fully-naked; words with double-bhāva are worthless; mirage-water doesn't quench thirst; the one who depends on no other is the brave one; these are the sant's ornaments and garments.
For someone today
Tukaram describes what real spiritual madness for God looks like, it means becoming completely open and unguarded, without hiding behind a mask. Words alone mean nothing if there are two different intentions behind them, one shown outwardly and another kept hidden inside. Just as staring at a mirage never actually quenches thirst, empty words or false appearances never satisfy a real need. The truly brave person is the one who stops depending on others for support and stands on their own inner truth, and Tukaram says that this honesty is the real mark, the true ornament, of a saint.
