Abhanga 3404
Wherever heartfelt devotion truly lives, even great wrongdoing burns away instantly, the way fire consumes a heap of dry grass.
The verse
काय करिती केलीं नित्य पापें । वसे नाम ज्यापें विठोबाचें ॥१॥
तृणीं हुताशन लागला ते रासी । जळतील तैसीं क्षणमात्रें ॥ध्रु.॥
विष्णुमूर्तिपाद पाहतां चरण । तेथें कर्म कोण राहूं शके ॥२॥
तुका म्हणे नाम जाळी महादोष । जेथें होय घोष कीर्तनाचा ॥३॥
Literal translation
What-can-daily-pāpas-do — Viṭhōbā-Nāma-dwells. Fire-on-trṇa-rāsī — burns-kṣaṇa-mātra. Viṣṇu-mūrti-pāda-seen — what-karma-can-stay. Tukā: Nāma-burns-mahā-dōṣa where-kīrtana-ghōṣa.
What it means
A 3-verse Name-purifies-pāpa text. Like-fire-on-a-grass-heap, Name burns pāpas instantly; where kīrtana roars, great sins are destroyed.
For someone today
Tukaram says that for someone in whom God's name truly lives, the harm of daily wrongdoing cannot hold much power. He compares it to fire falling on a heap of dry grass, everything burns away in a single instant, no matter how much has piled up. Standing before the divine feet, no old wrongdoing can remain standing in that presence. Tukaram's confidence is that wherever people gather and sing loudly together in devotion, even great faults get burned away, not through punishment but through the sheer presence of the name.
मराठी: तुकाराम म्हणतात, ज्याच्या हृदयात देवाचे नाव खरोखर वसते, त्याच्यावर रोजच्या चुकांचा फारसा प्रभाव पडत नाही. ते याची तुलना गवताच्या राशीवर पडलेल्या आगीशी करतात, कितीही साचले असले तरी सर्व काही एका क्षणात जळून जाते. देवाच्या चरणांसमोर उभे राहिल्यावर कोणतेही जुने पाप त्या उपस्थितीत टिकू शकत नाही. तुकारामांचा विश्वास असा आहे की जिथे लोक एकत्र येऊन मोठ्याने भक्तीने गातात, तिथे मोठमोठे दोषही जळून जातात, शिक्षेने नव्हे तर नामाच्या निव्वळ उपस्थितीने.
