The fool carries only the outer weight of a thing, while the discerning person extracts its true essence.
The verse
माकडा दिसती कंवटी नारळा । भोक्ता निराळा वरील सारी ॥१॥
एका रस एका तोंडीं पडे माती । आपुलाले नेती विभाग ते ॥ध्रु.॥
सुनियांसी क्षीर वाढिल्या ओकवी । भोगित्यां पोसवी धणीवरी ॥२॥
तुका म्हणे भार वागविती मूर्ख । नेतील तें सार परीक्षक ॥३॥
Literal translation
Monkey-sees-coconut-shell — eater-different-takes-inner. One-rasa, one-mouth-dust — each-takes-vibhāga. Milk-to-dog-vomits — bhōktā-sustained-to-dhaṇī. Tukā: mūrkhas-carry-bhāra — parīkṣakas-take-sāra.
What it means
A 3-verse discrimination-text with three concrete-images: monkey vs. knower (coconut outside vs. inside); same juice, one gets dust, each gets his share; milk to dog vs. discriminating bhōktā. The fool-bears-the-load, the-knower-takes-the-essence.
For someone today
Tukaram gives three sharp pictures of how understanding changes what you actually get out of something. A monkey only sees a coconut's rough husk and shell, while someone who truly knows it reaches the sweet kernel inside. From the same substance, one mouth gets nothing but dust while another gets real nourishment, each according to what they're able to take in. Milk given to a dog gets vomited back up, but the same milk satisfies someone who can properly receive it. The point is that fools end up carrying the heavy, useless weight of a thing, while those with real discernment extract its essence.
