Do not exhaust yourself on empty ritual and pointless talk, offer whatever you can in sincere, complete surrender instead.
The verse
ऐसी एकां अटी । रीतीं सिणती करंटीं ॥१॥
साच आपुल्या पुरतें । करून नेघेती कां हितें ॥ध्रु.॥
कां हीं वेचितील वाणी । निरर्थक चि कारणीं ॥२॥
तुका म्हणे देवा । कांहीं समर्पूनि सेवा ॥३॥
Literal translation
Some-take-hard-aṭīs — karaṇṭī tires-by-mere-rīti. Why-don't-they-take-their-own-hita. Why-spend-vāṇī on-niraṛthaka. Tukā: Deva — let-me-samarpaṇa-sevā.
What it means
A 3-verse observation about wasted-effort. Some bind themselves to hard vows and tire — yet they don't take what would truly be fully-beneficial.
For someone today
Tukaram observes some people wearing themselves out by binding themselves to rigid vows and rituals, going through the motions without actually gaining what would truly benefit them. He wonders why they don't simply reach for what is fully good for themselves instead of exhausting themselves on empty procedure. He also questions why so much speech gets wasted on pointless causes that lead nowhere. His own request is much simpler, he asks God for the chance to offer some small service, given in complete and sincere surrender rather than in strained formality.
मराठी: तुकाराम पाहतात की काही लोक कठोर व्रतांना आणि विधींना स्वतःला बांधून घेतात आणि थकून जातात, केवळ कर्मकांड करत राहतात पण त्यातून जे खरे हित मिळायला हवे ते मिळत नाही. त्यांना आश्चर्य वाटते की हे लोक स्वतःसाठी खरोखर पूर्ण हितकारक असेल ते का घेत नाहीत, आणि केवळ रिकाम्या पद्धतीत का थकतात. ते हेही विचारतात की इतकी वाणी निरर्थक कारणांवर का खर्च केली जाते, ज्यातून काहीच निष्पन्न होत नाही. त्यांची स्वतःची मागणी खूप साधी आहे, ते देवाकडे मागतात की काही छोटीशी सेवा करण्याची संधी मिळावी, ताणलेल्या औपचारिकतेने नव्हे तर पूर्ण आणि प्रामाणिक समर्पणाने केलेली.
