A steady practice of singing God's name can quietly ease worldly worries, mend relationships, and loosen the grip of desire, until you can finally trust the outcome to God.
The verse
Literal translation
Now-singing-Name-in-gīta — people-honor-me. No-anna-vastra-chintā — deha-pīḍā-warded-off. Sajjana-sambandhī-broke-upādhi — rōkaḍī-released-from-bandi. No-sāyāsa-of-give-take — āśā-pāśa-gone. Tukā: do-now-as-you-please, Anantā māyabāpā.
What it means
A striking 5-verse autobiographical text. Five things resolved by singing Name: (1) people honor me, (2) no anna-vastra chintā, (3) no body-suffering, (4) good-relations have broken bad-ties, (5) the noose-of-desire is gone.
For someone today
Tukaram reflects honestly on how singing God's name has quietly changed his whole life. People now respect him, where before they may not have. His constant worry over food and clothing has eased, and the deep bodily suffering he once carried has lifted. Relationships with good, honest people have replaced the tangled, obligatory ties he used to carry, and he no longer feels bound like a prisoner to old debts and duties. He no longer strains over what to take or give, because the grasping pull of desire has simply left him. In the end he lets go of trying to manage his own life and tells God, whom he calls his mother and father, to now do as he sees fit.
