Surrender to God can feel like forced, unpaid labor at first, until you realize he has simply claimed your entire life as his own.
The verse
Literal translation
Caught-in-vēṭha — for-free. He-takes-work-by-sattā-balē — making-me-bhēṇḍōḷē. Runs-behind-me — attaches-wherever-I-go. Tukā: my-everything-taken-by-Viṭhṭhal.
What it means
A striking 3-verse Lord-takes-everything text using the 17th-c. concrete-image of vēṭha (forced-corvée-labor — an unpaid-state-service). I've been caught in unpaid-labor; the Lord takes work by authority; he tails me everywhere; he has taken my entire-property (sarvasva). Sharp social-image of forced-labor turned into bhakti-paradox.
For someone today
Tukaram uses a sharp image from his own time, vēṭha, the forced unpaid labor peasants owed the state, to describe what devotion feels like from the inside. He says he was caught for free, put to work not by choice but by pure authority, bundled up and claimed. Wherever he goes, that presence runs right behind him and settles in. In the end he admits everything he owns, his whole self, has simply been taken by Vitthal. It is a reminder that real surrender rarely feels like a polite invitation; it can feel like being conscripted into a life you did not fully choose, yet that is also how total belonging happens.
Where this applies
- When you feel devotion or a calling has taken hold of you without your full consent
- When you sense that something greater has claimed your whole life, leaving nothing that feels purely your own
- When you notice a presence or purpose following you no matter where you go or what you try to escape
- When you struggle to accept that surrender can feel like being swept up rather than gently chosen
