Abhanga 3464
Tukaram surrenders his whole self so completely that his old self dies away, leaving room for God's authority alone and no sense of me or mine.
The verse
Literal translation
Gave-jīva-bhāva — then-abandoned-my-ṭhāva. Now-your-sattā-prevails — here-in-all-Anantā. By-my-dying — you-established-the-ṭhāṇa. Tukā: what — no-me-no-mine-here.
What it means
A striking 3-verse self-annihilation text. I gave my jīva-bhāva and abandoned my place; your authority prevails here; by my own dying, you set up your station; there is no 'me' or 'mine' here. The doctrine of bhakti-as-self-vacating.
For someone today
Tukaram describes a complete surrender, he gave his whole self, his very life and heart, to God, and in that moment he let go of any claim to his own place. Now, he says, it is God's authority that rules everywhere within him, not his own. By letting his old self die in this way, he made room for God to fully dwell there instead. In the end, Tukaram says there is simply no more me and no more mine left in him at all.
