Abhanga 3493

True companions are the ones who answer your call and speak as one with you, and sincerity in your words is seen even when no one else notices.

When you call out for help and the right people actually come.

When you and a friend say the same thing at once, with nothing to argue about.

When you speak plainly and trust that your sincerity is being seen, even without proof.

The verse

आम्हांसी सांगाती । होती अराले ते होती ॥१॥ येती आइकतां हाक । दोन मिळोन म्हणती एक ॥ध्रु.॥ आणिकां उत्तरीं । नसे गोवी वैखरी ॥२॥ तुका म्हणे बोल । खूण पहाती विठ्ठल ॥३॥

Literal translation

Our-sāngātī — arālē-become-so. Hearing-hāka — two-meet-say-as-one. No-gōvī-in-others'-uttara — vaikharī-not-entangled. Tukā: my-bōla — Viṭhṭhal-sees-the-khūṇa.

What it means

A 3-verse true-companions text. Those agreeing become our companions; on hearing the call, two meet and speak as one; no entanglement with others; Viṭhṭhal himself sees the sign in my words.

For someone today

Tukaram describes what real companionship looks like: the people who truly agree with you become your companions, and when you call out, they come and the two of you speak as one. With others there is no tangled argument, no wasted words trying to win a fight. He ends by saying that Viṭṭhal himself is watching, reading the sincerity in what Tukaram says.
