Abhanga 3635
Tukaram says he simply bears the results of whatever he has done, and wonders how a person of true faith would look at his life. He describes offering his whole body up in a gesture of surrender, laying it down completely rather than clinging to it. He admits plainly that he does not know how to control what will happen or won't happen, that authority was never really his to hold. So he takes up the steady stance of Vitthal himself, hand on his waist, and simply stands his ground with patience.
The verse
Literal translation
Whatever-I-did-I-bear — how-does-bhāvika-look. Waved-kāyā — cast-it-down. What-happens-doesn't — I-don't-know-to-hold-sattā. Tukā: kaṭī-kara — standing-with-dhīra.
What it means
A 3-verse text. Whatever I did, I now bear it — how does the bhāvika see this? I've waved my body around and offered it; I don't know how to hold authority over what-happens-and-doesn't; Tukā: hands-on-waist, standing with patience-held — the canonical Viṭhṭhal-pose mirrored back.
For someone today
Tukaram says he simply bears the results of whatever he has done, and wonders how a person of true faith would look at his life.
Where this applies
- When you must simply bear the results of choices you already made, whether good or bad
- When you offer your full effort or self to something and then have to let go of controlling the outcome
- When you realize authority over what happens next was never really yours to begin with
- When you need a steady, patient stance to hold onto while waiting through uncertainty
