When you trust someone deeply, it is honest to voice a hard complaint about unfairness rather than staying silently resentful.
The verse
Literal translation
You-have-many-uddharaṇa — I-no-other-thāra. Bear-me-as-I-am — Hrṣīkēśa. Line-won't-look-good — to-one-anna-to-one-gāḷī. Tukā: laying-on-ābhāra — you-have-many-vikharalētī.
What it means
A 3-verse sharp-accusation. You have-many-acts-of-uplifting; I have no other refuge. Bear with me as I am — what else can you do, Hrṣīkēśa? The line won't look good when (you give) food to one and a curse to another. Tukā lays on this charge — you've scattered many (in different fates). Ēkā-anna-ēkā-gāḷī is a sharp inconsistency-accusation.
For someone today
Tukaram points out that God has lifted up so many people already, and since he has no other refuge to turn to, he simply asks to be accepted as he is. Then he voices a hard, honest complaint: it does not look right when one person receives kindness and another receives only insult from the same source. He openly lays this accusation before God, naming the unevenness he sees in how fortunes are scattered among people. This is what it looks like to trust someone enough to confront them honestly instead of staying quietly resentful.
Where this applies
- When you notice unfairness in how kindness or hardship seems to fall unevenly among people
- When you feel you have no other refuge but the one person or path you are relying on
- When you are close enough to someone to voice a hard complaint honestly instead of staying silently resentful
- When you ask simply to be accepted as you are rather than measured against others
