Abhanga 3695
Once grace has truly arrived, you stop needing outward proof or contact, because a settled inward conviction is enough to hold you steady.
The verse
Literal translation
What-can-I-say-you-don't-know — what-sankalpa-bear. Sattā-placed — vāṇī-speaks-ājñā-by-pramāṇa. Krpā-came — no-anga-sanga-needed — nija-dhyāsa-ranga-grows. Tukā: past-words-vāva — now-bhāva-drḍha.
What it means
A 3-verse settled-state. What can I tell you that you don't know? — what sankalpa shall I bear? Where it is, sattā has placed it; the speech delivers the order by right-measure. When krpā has come, body-connection is not needed; by own-meditation, the color keeps rising. Past words are vain; now this bhāva is firm. The closing māgē bōlilōm tē vāva, ātām hā chi bhāva drḍha jhalā is striking: Tukārām dismisses all his prior-words as worthless and declares the current-bhāva as firm.
For someone today
Tukārām says there is nothing left to explain, because the order of things is already settled by a power greater than his own will. Once grace arrives, you no longer need to keep chasing outward contact or proof; a steady inward focus is enough to keep that glow alive. Looking back, he says all his earlier words were empty talk, and only now has his conviction become truly firm. This is the moment when doubt drops away and what you believe stops being an idea and becomes something solid you stand on.
Where this applies
- When you keep explaining your beliefs to others and realize the explaining itself was never the point
- When you finally feel steady in your faith after years of doubting and questioning yourself
- When you notice you no longer need constant outward reassurance because something inward has settled
- When you look back at old arguments you used to make and see how much has changed since then
