Abhanga 3721
Run to God without delay, fix your mind fully on him instead of on everyone else's opinions, and heartfelt, honest pleading is what truly moves him.
The verse
Literal translation
Make-running-running — attach-chitta-to-charaṇa. Then-māyabāpa-takes-tāpa-away. Don't-let-bahutām-mata-gōvā-happen-to-jīva. Tukā: karuṇā-bōla — Viṭhṭhal's-dhīra-doesn't-stay.
What it means
A 3-verse karuṇā-bōla-breaks-Viṭhṭhal text. Run-and-run; attach chitta to charaṇa; then māyabāpa will take the tāpa away; don't let entanglement-of-many's-opinions happen to jīva; by karuṇā-bōla, Viṭhṭhal's restraint breaks.
For someone today
Tukaram tells himself to run, urgently and without delay, and fix his mind on God's feet, because once he does, God, who is like a mother and father, will take his suffering away. He warns against letting the mind get tangled in the pull of many different opinions, which only pulls a person away from that single focus. When the heart speaks with real, unguarded compassion and longing, even Vitthal cannot hold back his response.
Where this applies
- When you keep delaying turning to prayer because you think you have time later
- When you are getting pulled in different directions by everyone else's advice about your problem
- When you feel like your pain will only ease once you truly focus your mind instead of half-heartedly asking for help
- When you finally speak from raw, honest feeling instead of a polished or guarded request
