Abhanga 3730
A place where true devotion is genuinely lived becomes blessed, protects itself from wrongdoing, and its devotees end up saving generations of their own family along with themselves.
The verse
धन्य तो ग्राम जेथें हरिदास । धन्य तो चि वास भाग्य तया ॥१॥
ब्रम्हज्ञान तेथें असे घरोघरीं । धन्य त्या नरनारी चतुर्भुज ॥ध्रु.॥
नाहीं पापा रिघ काळाचें जीवन । हरिनामकीर्त्तन घरोघरीं ॥२॥
तुका म्हणे तिहीं तारिलें सकळां । आपल्या कोटिकुळासहित जीव ॥३॥
Literal translation
Dhanya-tō-grāma-where-Hari-dāsas — blessed-vāsa-bhāgya. Brahma-jñāna-in-every-house — blessed-nara-nārī-chatur-bhuja. No-pāpa-righa-Kāḷa-jīvana — Hari-nāma-kīrtana-in-every-house. Tukā: they-saved-all — with-100-million-kuḷa-jīva.
What it means
A canonical dhanya-tō-grāma text — classic Vārkarī genre of blessed-village-with-Hari-dāsas. Blessed is the village where Hari-dāsas dwell; brahma-jñāna in every house; the men-and-women are like-four-armed-Viṣṇu (i.e., divine); no entry for sin; no death's-domain; Hari-nāma-kīrtana in every house; they save all — their 100-million-generations-of-kuḷa along with their jīvas. The image of nara-nārī chatur-bhuja (the men-and-women-as-four-armed-Viṣṇu) is a striking equality-of-divinization.
For someone today
Tukaram declares blessed any village where true devotees of Hari live, because their very presence makes that place fortunate. In such a village, spiritual wisdom fills every household, and the ordinary men and women there become, in a sense, as divine as God himself. Wrongdoing finds no foothold there, and fear of death loses its grip, because the name of Hari is being sung in every home. Tukaram says that such devotees don't just save themselves, they carry generations of their whole family lineage to safety along with them.
मराठी: तुकाराम म्हणतात की जिथे खरे हरिभक्त राहतात ते गाव धन्य होय, कारण त्यांच्या नुसत्या असण्यानेच ती जागा भाग्यवान बनते. अशा गावात प्रत्येक घरात आध्यात्मिक ज्ञान असते, आणि तिथले सामान्य स्त्री-पुरुषही जणू देवासारखेच पवित्र होऊन जातात. तिथे पापाला थारा मिळत नाही आणि मृत्यूची भीतीही उरत नाही, कारण प्रत्येक घरात हरिनामाचे कीर्तन चालू असते. तुकाराम म्हणतात की असे भक्त फक्त स्वतःलाच नाही, तर आपल्या संपूर्ण कुळाच्या अनेक पिढ्यांनाही तारून नेतात.
