Abhanga 3894
Tukaram gives up every reward, wealth, power, even liberation, asking only for one real, close embrace, because he cannot be happy if the one he loves is troubled.
The verse
Literal translation
If-svāmī-samkaṭa — no-prema-sukha-for-me. Won't-pain-your-chitta — won't-ask. Released-āsa-of-rddhi-siddhi-mokṣa-sampatti-vilāsa. Tukā: once-give-bhēṭi — vōrasōnī-pōṭīm-ālingāvē.
What it means
A 3-verse chitta-considerate prayer. If even one matter puts my svāmī in distress, what joy of love can I have? I won't pain your mind, Nārāyaṇa — I won't ask anything. Rddhi-siddhi-mokṣa-wealth-pleasure — I have released hope for all these. Just once give me a meeting — let me embrace you, folding into the stomach-of-feeling. The image vōrasōnī-pōṭīm-ālingāvē (to-embrace-by-folding-into-stomach, to weep-and-embrace) is the most-tender bhakta-Lord-meeting image. Compare 2807 (don't-want-Vaikuṇṭha-mokṣa-sāyujya — same released-āsa-of-fruits doctrine).
For someone today
Tukaram says his own happiness means nothing to him if it comes at the cost of God's peace of mind, if his beloved is troubled by anything, he can't truly enjoy love or joy himself. So he decides not to trouble God with requests, no wealth, no supernatural powers, no even liberation itself, he releases all hope for these rewards entirely. What he wants instead is something far simpler and more intimate: just one real meeting, one chance to hold God close in a full, unguarded embrace.
Where this applies
- When you care so much about someone that their distress ruins your own happiness, even if things are going well for you
- When you're tempted to ask for practical rewards from a relationship instead of just wanting closeness itself
- When you release your attachment to success, status, or spiritual achievements in favor of one real, intimate connection
- When all you truly want from someone is a genuine, unguarded embrace, not gifts or favors
