Abhanga 3909
Tukaram asks God to arrange his welfare and cut the ties and false hopes holding him back, so he can rest worry-free in quiet closeness with the divine.
The verse
Literal translation
You'll-do-upāya-for-hita-knowing-bhāva. No-kheda-sukha-duḥkha — bhāvanā-chittī-chhandā. Cut-sambandha-āśā-pāśa-without-sāyāsa-for-me. Tukā: I-niścinta — kavaḷōnī-ēkānta-sukha.
What it means
A 3-verse handing-over-prayer. Whatever means will bring my welfare — you will do it, knowing my state. I have no regret of joy-and-sorrow — but anxiety lies on my heart in many tempos. Cut these relationships, cut the rope-of-hope — without making me struggle. I'll remain worry-free — gathering your solitary-joy in my arms. The handing-over is total: you do it; cut-the-bonds; I'll just sit in your ēkānta-sukha.
For someone today
Tukaram hands the whole problem over to God, saying that whatever course of action will actually be good for him, God already knows and can arrange it. He isn't troubled by joy or sorrow themselves, but his mind still keeps churning with restless anxiety in many different moods. So he asks God to cut the ties and the ropes of hope that keep him stuck, and to do it without making him struggle for it himself. Once that's done, Tukaram says he'll simply rest, worry free, holding onto the quiet joy of being alone with God.
