Abhanga 4088

You can only truly recognize goodness in others once you have begun to grow that same goodness and steadiness within yourself.

When you keep studying what makes someone good but still can't recognize it clearly in real life
When you feel scattered and unsettled instead of grounded enough to truly see others clearly
When you realize that becoming better yourself is what helps you finally recognize goodness in someone else

The verse

Literal translation

Describing-santa-lakṣaṇa-apāra — house-not-found. Where-santas-live — ṭhikāṇa-not-within-reach. Fix-ṭhikāṇa-then-see-santas — don't-be-scattered. Tukā: become-sant-to-see-sant — only-then-cross.

What it means

A 3-verse recognition-by-becoming text. Describing endless marks of santas is unlimited; but you don't find the santa's house. The very place where the santas dwell doesn't become within your reach. Fix the place, then look at the santas; don't just stay scattered. Becoming a sant oneself, one (truly) sees the santas — only then is one able to cross. The structural claim: describing-marks-doesn't-find-santa; only-becoming-like-a-sant-recognizes-sant.

For someone today

Tukaram says you can list endless qualities that describe a truly good person, but that alone won't help you actually find them or recognize where they live. You need to be grounded and settled yourself before you can truly see a good person for who they are, rather than wandering around scattered and unfocused. His striking point is that you can only really recognize goodness in others once you have started to grow that same goodness in yourself. It is that mutual recognition, becoming like the people you seek, that actually helps you move forward in life.
