Outward symbols of holiness mean nothing if greed hasn't actually left you, real change has to happen inside, not just in appearance.
The verse
शिष्या सांगे उपदेश । गुरुपूजा हे विशेष ॥१॥
दावी आचार सोवळे । दंड कमंडलु माळे ॥ध्रु.॥
छाटी भगवी मानसीं । व्यर्थ म्हणवी संन्यासी ॥२॥
तुका म्हणे लोभ । न सुटे नाहीं लाभ ॥३॥
Literal translation
Teach-disciple — guru-pūjā-special. Show-ācāra-sōvaḷē — daṇḍa-kamaṇḍalu-māḷē. Chāṭī-bhagavī — vyartha-samnyāsī. Tukā: lōbha-doesn't-leave — no-lābha.
What it means
A 3-verse anti-fake-samnyāsī text. To the disciple he teaches — guru-worship is the special thing. He shows right-conduct, ritual-purity — staff, water-pot, rosary. He wears the ochre cloth in mind — uselessly he calls himself samnyāsī. Tukā says: if greed does not leave — there is no gain. The diagnosis: external-symbols (staff, water-pot, rosary, ochre-cloth) don't make-a-samnyāsī; without-inner-lōbha-renunciation, no lābha. Pair with 4423 (anti-fake-guru-disciple-yearly-rent), 4253 (anti-fake-mahanti), 4286 (anti-bhōndū-fake-sādhu).
For someone today
Tukārām describes a certain kind of teacher who tells his disciples how important it is to worship the guru, and who dresses the part perfectly, ritual purity, staff, water-pot, rosary, ochre robes, all the outward marks of a renunciate. But Tukārām says plainly that wearing the robe in appearance only, while your mind stays attached, makes calling yourself a renunciate empty and pointless. His conclusion is sharp and simple, if greed hasn't actually left you, none of the outer show earns you anything real. The verse is a warning against mistaking costume and ritual for actual inner change.
मराठी: तुकाराम अशा एका प्रकारच्या गुरूचे वर्णन करतात जो शिष्यांना गुरुपूजेचे महत्त्व सांगतो, आणि जो बाह्यतः अगदी परिपूर्ण दिसतो, सोवळेपणा, दंड, कमंडलू, माळ, भगवी वस्त्रे, संन्याशाची सगळी बाह्य चिन्हे तो धारण करतो. पण तुकाराम स्पष्टपणे सांगतात की मन आतून आसक्त असताना केवळ वेषाने भगवी वस्त्रे परिधान करणे, आणि स्वतःला संन्यासी म्हणवणे, हे व्यर्थ आहे. त्यांचा निष्कर्ष अगदी सरळ आणि परखड आहे, जर खरोखर लोभ सुटला नसेल, तर बाह्य देखाव्याने काहीच मिळत नाही. वेष आणि विधी यांना खऱ्या आंतरिक बदलाशी गल्लत करू नये, असा इशारा हा अभंग देतो.
