The sacred isn't confined to a special place, it can fill your sight completely so that everywhere you look, it's equally present.
The verse
Literal translation
Wherever-look-stands — gābhā-of-gagana. Sat-in-eye — rūpa-samchalē. Doesn't-vacate-10-directions — wherever-look-equal. Tukā: sama-padī — standing-before-drṣṭi.
What it means
A 3-verse Lord-omnipresence text. Wherever I look, he stands — the kernel of the whole sky. Sat in my eye, stayed — his form, remaining, has filled (me). Without vacating the ten directions — wherever I look, he is equally there. Tukā says: he stands on equal-step — standing before sight.
For someone today
Tukārām describes a state where wherever he turns his eyes, he finds God standing there, at the very core of the whole sky. That form has settled into his eye and filled him completely, not withdrawing from any of the ten directions, so that everywhere he looks, God is equally present. There's no special place he has to go or search harder to find the divine, it simply stands right in front of his sight at every moment. This is a picture of a mind that has stopped treating God as something distant or occasional and instead finds the sacred woven into everything it perceives.
Where this applies
- When you're searching for a special place or moment to feel spiritually connected, forgetting it can be found right where you already are
- When ordinary daily surroundings start to feel infused with meaning rather than mundane
- When you want to shift from treating the sacred as occasional to noticing it as constantly present
- When you feel far from God and need reassurance that the divine isn't confined to any one direction or place
