Abhanga 812

True devotion shows up in the whole body, a choking voice, growing love, tears, gooseflesh, and it asks for nothing else, ever, but rest at the feet of the saints.

What it means

A nāma-makes-kaṇṭha-sad-gada-prema-grow-rōmāñca-ānanda-tears-eight-anga-prema-body-in-kīrtana-rest-at-santa-feet abhang. Full-bhāva-saturation register. Three claims:

1. Nāma-आठवितां — कंठ-सद्-गदित — प्रेम-वाढे-पोटीं — रोमांच-आनंद-अश्रु — अष्टांग-गात्र-प्रेम. Full-bhāva-saturation-claim. When thenāmais remembered — thekaṇṭhathickens withsad-gada; letprēmagrow in thepōṭa; rōmāñca (gooseflesh) on body, ānanda-aśru in eyes;eight-anga of gātra (limbs) — Your prēma. Full-eight-fold bodily-saturation-with-prema.

2. सर्व-शरीर-वेचो-कीर्तनीं — निशि-दिनीं-नाम-गाऊं. Body-spent-in-kīrtana-day-night-claim. Let allśarīrabevēcō(spent) in thiskīrtana; let's singniśi-dini(night-and-day) Yournāma. Body-spent-day-and-night-in-kīrtana.

3. Tuka: दुजें-न-करीं-कल्पांतीं — सर्वदा-विश्रांति-संतां-पाई. No-other-at-kalpānta-rest-at-santa-feet-claim. Tuka says:I won't do another at kalpānta (the cosmic-end, the universe's-dissolution);always — viśrānti (rest) at santa-pāī. No-other-even-at-kalpānta-rest-at-santa-feet.

This abhang names the full-devotion pattern:

1. Remembering the name, the throat chokes with feeling; love grows in the belly; gooseflesh rises, tears of joy fill the eyes, and love fills every one of the eight limbs of the body. Devotion filling the whole body.

2. Let the whole body be spent in this kirtan, singing Your name day and night. The body spent in kirtan.

3. I will not turn to anything else, even at the end of the universe; my rest is always at the feet of the saints. Rest at the feet of the saints.

For today: when the name is remembered, the throat chokes with feeling, love grows in the belly, gooseflesh covers the body, tears of joy fill the eyes, and love fills the whole body from head to foot; let the whole body be spent in kirtan, singing the name day and night; there is no other refuge, even at the end of the universe — rest is found always at the feet of the saints.

This abhang is one of Tukaram's most complete lists of devotion's bodily signs. Compare 0741, where a devotee's worship pours out toward the honored image wherever it is praised — the same fullness of devotion, but here it is organized as a list of bodily signs of devotion: the choking throat, the gooseflesh, the tears of joy, love filling all eight limbs. "Rest is always at the feet of the saints" names the final resting place this devotion comes to.
