Abhanga 1165

Milk, rice, ghee, and sweets can satisfy your hunger, Tukaram says, but they never actually carry you across to lasting freedom. Whole ages pass by in this eating and enjoying, and every mixture of sour and sweet pleasure ends in regret later on. But whoever tastes the true flavor of Rama, he says, never has to go through that same cycle again. So why keep dying over and over, unlucky soul? Break this endless count of repeated deaths.

When dūdha-bhāta-ghrta — removes hunger but no anta-tāra — and you have to recognize this register
When eating yuga; khaṭa-mīṭhā regretted — and you accept this image
When Rāma-rasa pāvē; no bahuri phēra — and you allow this image

The verse

For someone today

Milk, rice, ghee, and sweets can satisfy your hunger, Tukaram says, but they never actually carry you across to lasting freedom. Whole ages pass by in this eating and enjoying, and every mixture of sour and sweet pleasure ends in regret later on. But whoever tastes the true flavor of Rama, he says, never has to go through that same cycle again. So why keep dying over and over, unlucky soul? Break this endless count of repeated deaths.
