Abhanga 3277
A life spent entirely on anxious worldly troubles, with never a moment carried to devotion, leaves a person exhausted with only more stress waiting at home.
The verse
निजों नव्हें सकाळवेळीं । रातीकाळी चिंन चिंनी॥१॥
वोंगळानें घेतली पाठी । केली आटी जीवासी ॥ध्रु.॥
मेळऊनि सवें जन । चिंता नेणे देवळीं च ॥२॥
तुका म्हणे आलों घरा । तोंडा घोरा बाइलेच्या ॥३॥
Literal translation
Can't-sleep at-morning; rātrī-kāḷa was-chinta-chinta. Vōngaḷa-grasped-back, jīva-āṭi. Gathers-people, doesn't-bring-chintā-to-devaḷa. Tukā: comes-home — bāila's-tōṇḍa-ghōra.

A short 3-verse domestic-criticism. Worry-at-night, can't-rest, gathers-people-not-Deva, comes-home-to-shrew.
For someone today
Tukaram paints an unflattering portrait of a person completely consumed by worldly stress. This person cannot even sleep through the morning because he spent the whole night tangled in worry after worry. Some petty trouble, like a nagging pest, has taken hold of him and worn his spirit down. He gathers company and busies himself with people, yet he never carries even a moment of devotion into the temple. And after all that restless effort, Tukaram notes wryly, all he has to come home to is his wife's harsh scolding.
मराठी: तुकाराम पूर्णपणे संसारी काळजीत बुडालेल्या माणसाचे रोखठोक चित्र रेखाटतात. हा माणूस सकाळीसुद्धा नीट झोपू शकत नाही, कारण रात्रभर तो एका मागोमाग एक काळजीत गुंतलेला असतो. एखाद्या त्रासदायक किड्यासारखी छोटी अडचण त्याच्या पाठीला चिकटलेली असते आणि त्याचा जीव शिणवते. तो लोकांना जमवतो, माणसांत गुंतून राहतो, पण देवळात मात्र क्षणभरही भक्तिभाव घेऊन जात नाही. आणि एवढी धडपड करूनही, तुकाराम खोचकपणे सांगतात, घरी परतल्यावर त्याला फक्त बायकोचे कठोर बोलणे ऐकावे लागते.
