Real contentment comes from resting within yourself instead of judging things as good or bad or endlessly totting up gains and losses.
The verse
आतां बरें घरिच्याघरीं । आपली उरी आपणापें ॥१॥
वाइटबरें न पडे दृष्टी । मग कष्टी होइजेना ॥ध्रु.॥
बोलों जातां वाढे बोल । वांयां फोल खटखट ॥२॥
काकुलती यावें देवा । तो तों सेवा इच्छितो ॥३॥
हिशोबाचे खटखटे । चढे तुटे घडेना ॥४॥
तुका म्हणे कळों आलें । दुसरें भलें तों नव्हे ॥५॥
Literal translation
Now-good-at-home — urī-with-self. Vāiṭa-barē-not-in-drṣṭi — no-kaṣṭa. Speaking-words-multiply — vain-fōla-khaṭa-khaṭa. Let-kākulatī-come, Deva-wants-sevā. Accounts'-chatter — chaḍhē-tuṭē-doesn't-fit. Tukā: came-to-know — dusarē-isn't-bhalē.
What it means
A 5-verse resolution text. Now I'm at-home; good-and-bad don't enter my gaze; words multiply into vain chatter; let longing come — Deva wants sevā; the chatter of accounts doesn't add up; I've come to know — the second-thing isn't good.
For someone today
Tukārām describes finally settling at home within himself, no longer needing to judge everything around him as good or bad. Arguing and explaining only makes words multiply into empty chatter, and endlessly tallying accounts of gain and loss never adds up to anything. What truly matters, he says, is simply longing for God and offering him service — everything else is a poor second to that.
मराठी: तुकाराम सांगतात की आता ते स्वतःच्या घरात - म्हणजे आपल्याच अंतरंगात - स्थिर झाले आहेत, चांगले-वाईट ठरवण्याची गरज उरली नाही. बोलत राहिल्याने शब्द केवळ वाढतात आणि व्यर्थ कटकट होते; हिशोब मांडत बसण्यानेही काही साधत नाही. खरी गोष्ट म्हणजे देवाची आस धरणे आणि त्याची सेवा करणे — याखेरीज दुसरे काहीही खरोखर चांगले नाही.
