Abhanga 3616
Even after fully surrendering yourself, it's fair to ask why other powers still control your life when the authority you trust is near and complete.
The verse
Literal translation
Why-darśana-of-dōṣa — having-offered-deha-bhāva. Pāṇḍurangā-krpāḷu-holds-sattā-over-all. Why-others-sattā-over-us — when-near. Tukā: at-feet-nivēdana — give-uchita-dāna-by-sattā.
What it means
A 3-verse why-others-have-sattā petition. Why do we encounter fault when we've offered the body? You hold authority over all; why does anyone else have authority over us when you're near; I've made my offering — give the proper-gift by your authority.
For someone today
Tukārām asks a pointed question: if he has already offered his whole sense of self and body to God, why does he still keep running into fault and blame? He addresses Pāṇḍuranga directly as merciful and compassionate, the one who truly holds authority over everything. So he wonders, if that authority is so near and so complete, why do other forces and other people still seem to have power over his life? He closes by saying he has made his full declaration and surrender at those feet, and now asks that the proper gift, the rightful blessing, be given by that very authority.
