Abhanga 3627
Real devotion eventually cannot be hidden, and truly meeting God breaks the old attachments that once defined you.
The verse
याची कोठें लागली चट । बहु तट जालेंसे ॥१॥
देवपिसीं देवपिसीं । मजऐसीं जग म्हणे ॥ध्रु.॥
एकांताचें बाहेर आलें । लपविलें झांकेना ॥२॥
तुका म्हणे याचे भेटी । जाली तुटी आपल्यांसी ॥३॥
Literal translation
Where-chaṭa-attached — much-taṭa-heaped. Deva-pisī-deva-pisī — jaga-calls-me-thus. Ekānta-came-out — hidden-can't-stay-covered. Tukā: his-bhēṭī — tuṭī-with-my-own.
What it means
A striking 3-verse text. Where has this attachment-glue gotten stuck? — much-heap-piled. The world calls people like me 'god-crazy, god-crazy'; what was private has come out — what's hidden cannot stay covered; by meeting him, the break with my own happened. The deva-pisī (god-crazed) self-identification is striking — Tukārām owning the public-label.
For someone today
Tukaram wonders out loud where this attachment to God even took root, because it has piled up so much inside him that he cannot hide it anymore. The world calls people like him god-crazed, god-crazed, and he does not deny it, he simply owns the label. What used to be a private, quiet devotion has spilled out into the open, because something hidden that deep cannot stay covered forever. And once he truly met God, it broke his ties with his old sense of self and his old attachments.
मराठी: तुकाराम स्वतःशीच विचारतात की देवावरचे हे प्रेम नक्की कुठून सुरू झाले, कारण ते इतके साचले आहे की आता ते लपवणे शक्यच नाही. लोक त्यांच्यासारख्यांना देवपिसे, देवपिसे म्हणतात, आणि ते ते नाकारत नाहीत, उलट तो शिक्का स्वीकारतात. जे आधी खासगी, शांत भक्ती होती, ते आता उघड झाले आहे, कारण इतके खोलवर लपलेले काहीही कायम झाकलेले राहू शकत नाही. आणि देवाची खरी भेट झाल्यावर त्यांचा जुना स्वतःचा आणि जुन्या नात्यांचा बंध तुटला.
