Abhanga 3662
When you have done all you can but fear outside forces could still undo it, it is honest to cry out urgently for help rather than face it alone.
The verse
Literal translation
Don't-release-me-Nārāyaṇa — else-Kāḷa-grabs. Saying-this-utarāī — what-else-in-hands. What's-done-māpa-doesn't-reach-end — antarāyas-make-nāśa. Tukā: bhaya-in-jīva — run-quickly.
What it means
A 3-verse rescue-petition. Now don't release me, Nārāyaṇa — else I'll be caught by Kāḷa; saying this I've fulfilled my obligation; the measure of my doings won't reach the end; obstacles will undo it; fear is in my jīva — come quickly.
For someone today
Tukaram begs God not to let go of him now, warning that otherwise death will simply take him. Having spoken this plainly, he feels he has done all that is truly in his own hands, there is nothing more he can add. He admits that his own efforts alone will not carry him to the end, obstacles can still undo everything he has built. Real fear rises in him, so he cries out for help urgently, right now, not later.
