Abhanga 3834
A community where spiritual wisdom fills every home and everyone is honored as divine leaves no room for sin, and that vision alone is worth devoting your heart to.
The verse
Literal translation
Brahma-jñāna-in-every-house — sarva-nirantara-chatur-bhuja. No-pāpa-rīga — Kāḷa's-khaṇḍana — Hari-nāma-kīrtana-parōparī. Tukā: this-only-bhāva-in-chitta — no-chāḍa-for-other-gati.
What it means
A 3-verse companion-formulation to the famous 3730 (dhanya-tō-grāma-where-Hari-dāsas). Brahma-jñāna in every house; all beings are continuously four-armed (like Viṣṇu, i.e., divine). No entry for sin; Kāḷa is broken; Hari-nāma-kīrtana flows in every way. This alone is the bhāva in my chitta — I have no relish for any other goal. The line sarva nirantara chatur-bhuja (all-beings-continuously-four-armed) extends 3730's nara-nārī-chatur-bhuja to include literally everyone — radical equality-of-divinization. Pair with 3730 (dhanya-tō-grāma), 3735 (janī Janārdana — humanity-as-divine).
For someone today
Tukaram imagines a place where deep spiritual wisdom lives in every home, and everyone, without exception, is treated as inherently divine. In such a place sin finds no entrance, the grip of death and time loosens, and the singing of God's name flows constantly through daily life. Tukaram says this vision is the one thing that fills his heart, and he has no interest in chasing any other goal or reward. It's a picture of a community shaped entirely by shared devotion rather than status or achievement.
Where this applies
- When you imagine a community where everyone is respected as equally worthy
- When you feel your daily habits, like singing or chanting, are shaping a better shared life
- When you decide one true goal is enough and stop chasing every other ambition
- When you notice how a place feels different because devotion fills its everyday rhythms
