Abhanga 4092
Ask to truly see the divine in every person, not just believe it, so that anger and judgment naturally stop arising toward others.
The verse
Literal translation
Nara-nārī-bāḷē-all-Nārāyaṇa — make-mind-see-Deva. No-kāma-krōdha-dvēṣa-nindā — all-Govinda-niḥsandēha. Virakta-viṣaya — kāyā-vāchā-chitta-at-feet. Tukā: fulfill-manōratha-be-krpāvanta.
What it means
THE canonical 3-verse see-Nārāyaṇa-in-everyone text. Men, women, children — all are Nārāyaṇa — make my mind see this, Deva. May kāma-krōdha-dvēṣa-nindā-conflict not arise — all is Govinda, beyond doubt. Let me always be detached from sense-objects; let body-speech-mind be at your feet. Doing this help, fulfill (my) heart's-desire; be compassionate. The line nara-nārī-bāḷē-avaghā-Nārāyaṇa is the most-direct humanity-as-divine doctrine — Tukārām asking Deva make my mind see this. Pair with 3735 (janī Janārdana — 4-fold pervasion), 3834 (sarva-chatur-bhuja), 3865 (Pandhari-radical-inclusion), 3730 (dhanya-tō-grāma).
For someone today
Tukaram prays for a very specific shift in perception: that he might actually see every man, woman, and child as an expression of the divine, not just believe it as an idea. He asks that anger, desire, hatred, and the urge to criticize others simply stop arising in him, because once you truly see everyone this way, there's nothing left to fight or condemn. He also asks to stay unattached to fleeting pleasures and to dedicate his body, speech, and mind fully. It's an honest prayer, admitting this kind of seeing doesn't come naturally and asking for help and grace to actually live it.
Where this applies
- When you struggle to see the humanity or divinity in someone you find difficult or unlikable
- When anger, jealousy, or the urge to criticize someone flares up and you wish it simply wouldn't
- When you notice you believe in equality or oneness as an idea but don't actually feel it in daily life
- When you want to ask for help changing your perception rather than forcing yourself to feel differently
