Abhanga 4114
A person who truly holds real devotion in their heart finds peace, kindness, and even great powers coming to them naturally, while harmful qualities and inner restlessness simply cannot take root.
The verse
भक्तीचें वर्म जयाचिये हातीं । तया घरी शांति दया ॥१॥
अष्टमासिद्धि वोळगती द्वारीं । न वजती दुरी दवडितां॥ध्रु.॥
तेथें दुष्ट गुण न मिळे निशेष । चैतन्याचा वास जयामाजी ॥२॥
संतुष्ट चित्त सदा सर्वकाळ । तुटली हळहळ त्रिगुणाची ॥३॥
तुका म्हणे येथें काय तो संदेह । आमचें गौरव आम्ही करूं ॥४॥
Literal translation
Bhakti-varma-in-hand — śānti-dayā-at-home. Aṣṭa-siddhis-at-door — won't-go-far. No-duṣṭa-guṇa — chaitanya-vāsa. Chitta-samtuṣṭa — triguṇa-haḷahaḷa-cut. Tukā: no-samdēha — own-gaurava.
What it means
A 4-verse bhakta-portrait text. He in whose hand is the essence of bhakti — at his home there is peace and mercy. The eight-great-siddhis attend at his door; even if driven off, they don't go far. No defective quality sticks; chaitanya dwells in him. His mind is content always; the smouldering-restlessness of the three guṇas is cut. What doubt is there here? — we do our own honor (self-attesting). The aṣṭa-siddhis-attending-at-the-bhakta's-door is a striking image — the eight great-yogic-powers as servants-of-the-bhakti-house.
For someone today
Tukaram describes what real bhakti does to a person, whoever truly holds it finds their home filled with peace and kindness, and even the eight great extraordinary powers that seekers chase for years come and wait at their door on their own, refusing to stay away even if pushed off. No harmful quality can take root in such a person because a living, awake presence fills them completely, leaving their mind content at all times and free from the restless pull of conflicting inner tendencies. He closes with total confidence, saying there is no doubt about this at all, this state speaks for itself.
मराठी: तुकाराम खऱ्या भक्तीचा एखाद्या माणसावर काय परिणाम होतो हे सांगतात, जो खरोखर भक्ती हातात धरतो त्याचे घर शांती आणि दयेने भरून जाते, आणि साधक वर्षानुवर्षे शोधत असलेल्या आठ महान अलौकिक शक्तीही स्वतःहून त्याच्या दारी येऊन उभ्या राहतात, हुसकावले तरी दूर जात नाहीत. अशा माणसामध्ये कोणताही वाईट गुण मूळ धरू शकत नाही कारण एक जागृत, चैतन्यमय उपस्थिती त्याला पूर्णपणे भरून टाकते, त्यामुळे त्याचे मन सदैव समाधानी राहते आणि परस्परविरोधी अंतःप्रवृत्तींच्या अस्वस्थ ओढाताणीतून मुक्त होते. शेवटी ते पूर्ण आत्मविश्वासाने म्हणतात की यात काहीच शंका नाही, ही अवस्था स्वतःच स्वतःची साक्ष देते.
