Abhanga 4188

In this short, simple prayer, Tukārām asks God, the compassionate one, to give him the kind of understanding that actually leads to liberation, so that his feet find a true resting place at God's own feet. He asks that his speech be genuine, that whatever he says about Pāṇḍuraṅga come from real faith and not empty words. Finally, he asks God to settle inside his innermost heart. The lesson is that the deepest prayer is not for cleverness or eloquence but for honest understanding and a faith that actually lives inside you rather than staying only on your lips.

अहो कृपावंता । हाई बुद्धीचा ये दाता ॥१॥ जेणें पाविजे उद्धार । होय तुझे पायीं थार ॥ध्रु.॥ वदवी हे वाचा । भाव पांडुरंगीं साचा ॥२॥ तुका म्हणे देवा । माझें अंतर वसवा ॥३॥

Literal translation

Krpāvanta-give-buddhi. Uddhāra-at-pāya-thāra. Speak-vāchā — bhāva-true-Pāṇḍurangī. Tukā: deva — settle-my-antara.

What it means

A 3-verse brief-petition. O compassionate-one, be the giver of this discernment; by which uddhāra (comes), let there be a resting-place at your feet. Let this speech be uttered, let the bhāva in Pāṇḍurangī be true. Tukā says: Deva — settle in my innermost.
