Abhanga 4269
Ask to stay devoted without divided loyalty or forgetfulness, and trust that sincere wishes are fulfilled the way a wish-granting tree gives whatever is asked.
The verse
हें चि सुख पुढे मागतों आगळें । आनंदाचीं फळें सेवादान ॥१॥
जन्मजन्मांतरीं तुझा चि अंकिला । करूनि विठ्ठला दास ठेवीं ॥ध्रु.॥
दुजा भाव आड येऊं नेदीं चत्तिा । करावा अनंता नास त्याचा ॥२॥
अभय देऊनि करावें सादर । क्षण तो विसर पडों नेदीं ॥३॥
तुका म्हणे आम्ही जेजे इच्छा करूं । ते ते कल्पतरू पुरविसी ॥४॥
Literal translation
This-sukha-more-asked — ānanda-phaḷē-sēvā-dāna. Janma-janmāntarīm — keep-me-dāsa-Viṭhṭhal. Don't-let-dujā-bhāva — Ananta-make-nāśa. Abhaya-make-sādara — no-kṣaṇa-forgetting. Tukā: whatever-iccha — kalpataru-fulfils.
What it means
A 4-verse canonical janma-janmāntarīm-dāsa + kalpataru-Lord text. I ask only this very joy, more abundant: bliss-fruits, the gift-of-service. Birth-after-birth, make me your registered-(servant), Viṭhṭhal; keep me as a slave. Don't let a second-feeling come into my heart — Ananta, make its destruction. Give fearlessness, make me attentive; let not one moment of forgetting happen. Tukā says: whatever wish we make — you fulfil as a wish-tree. Pair with 4205 (births-of-any-caste-acceptable-if-Name-stays), 3396 (anti-mukti-pro-rebirth-for-prēma).
For someone today
Tukaram asks for just one thing going forward, but he wants it in greater measure, the joy that comes from being given the gift of service. He asks to remain devoted to Vitthal, life after life, kept close as a faithful servant rather than left to drift. He prays that no divided loyalty or distracting feeling will ever get between him and God, and asks for that possibility to be destroyed outright. He wants to be given fearlessness and full attention, so that not even a single moment slips by in forgetfulness. Tukaram ends by saying that whatever devotees genuinely wish for, God fulfills it the way a wish-granting tree gives whatever is asked of it.
मराठी: तुकाराम पुढे फक्त एकाच गोष्टीची मागणी करतात, पण ती अधिक भरभरून हवी आहे, सेवेची संधी मिळाल्याने येणारा आनंद. ते विनवतात की जन्मोजन्मी विठ्ठलाशी असेच जोडलेले राहावे, भरकटून न जाता एक विश्वासू सेवक म्हणून जवळ ठेवले जावे. ते प्रार्थना करतात की कुठलीही दुजाभावाची, विचलित करणारी भावना देवाच्या आणि त्यांच्या मध्ये कधीच येऊ नये, आणि तशी शक्यता पूर्णपणे नष्ट व्हावी अशी विनंती करतात. त्यांना निर्भयता आणि पूर्ण लक्ष हवं आहे, जेणेकरून एकही क्षण विस्मरणात जाऊ नये. तुकाराम शेवटी म्हणतात की भक्त जी काही मनापासून इच्छा करतात, ती देव इच्छापूर्तीच्या कल्पतरूसारखी पूर्ण करतो.
