Some sacred places and moments of direct connection give you more than years of formal vows, pilgrimages, or giving ever could.
The verse
सकळतीर्थाहुनि । पंढरी हें मुगुटमणि ॥१॥
काय सांगों तेथिल शोभा । रमावल्लभ जेथें उभा ॥ध्रु.॥
न लभे व्रततीर्थदानीं । तें या विठ्ठलदर्शनीं ॥२॥
साधु संत गाती नाम । सकळ भूतांचा विश्राम ॥३॥
तुका म्हणे स्तुती । करूं काय सांगों किती ॥४॥
Literal translation
Paṇḍharī-mukuṭa-maṇi-of-all-tīrthas. Ramā-vallabha-stands — tēthila-śōbhā. Not-in-vrata-tīrtha-dāna — but-Viṭṭhal-darśana. Sādhu-santa-sing-Nāma — viśrāma-of-all-bhūtas. Tukā: stuti — how-much.
What it means
A 4-verse Paṇḍharī-supremacy text. Among all the tīrthas — Paṇḍharī is the crown-jewel. What splendor can I tell of that place — where Ramā's-beloved (Viṭṭhal) stands? What is not obtained in vow, pilgrimage, gift — is obtained in this Viṭṭhal-darśana. Sādhus, santas sing the Name — (Paṇḍharī is) the resting-place of all beings. Tukā says: what praise can I make — how much can I tell? The crown-jewel-image: Paṇḍharī = mukuṭa-maṇi of all tīrthas. Pair with 4185 (Pāṇḍharī=Kāśī 10-pair), 4404 (Paṇḍharī-darśana-mokṣa-with-or-without-bhāva).
For someone today
Tukārām calls Paṇḍharpur the crown jewel among every holy place, the ground where Viṭṭhal himself stands. He says its splendor is beyond words, and that what fasting, pilgrimage, and charitable giving fail to deliver, a simple glimpse of Viṭṭhal there provides freely. Sādhus and saints gather to sing the Name, and the whole place becomes a resting spot for every living being. Tukārām admits he cannot find enough words to praise it fully. The point isn't that other spiritual efforts are worthless, but that some places and some moments of direct connection can give you more than years of formal practice.
मराठी: तुकाराम पंढरपूरला सर्व तीर्थांमधील मुगुटमणी म्हणतात, जिथे स्वतः विठ्ठल उभा आहे. ते म्हणतात की त्या ठिकाणचे तेज शब्दांत सांगता येत नाही, आणि जे व्रत, तीर्थयात्रा किंवा दानधर्मानेही मिळत नाही, ते विठ्ठलाच्या केवळ एका दर्शनाने सहज मिळते. तिथे साधुसंत नामसंकीर्तन करतात, आणि ते ठिकाण सर्व जीवांसाठी विश्रांतीचे स्थान बनते. तुकाराम कबूल करतात की या ठिकाणाची स्तुती करण्यासाठी शब्दच अपुरे पडतात. याचा अर्थ इतर साधना निरुपयोगी आहेत असे नाही, तर काही ठिकाणे आणि काही थेट भेटीचे क्षण वर्षानुवर्षांच्या औपचारिक साधनेपेक्षाही अधिक देऊन जातात.
